Wednesday Wants: DIY cupcake stand

Mixed florals 70s cupcake stand

So I’ve toyed around with starting a “Pinterest to Realist” series here since we’re doing so many DIY for our wedding in t-minus 3 weeks and counting! Yikes!  We’re having a desert table with a variety of pot-luck-style deserts (my Portland friends have graciously agreed to make a plate full of goodies each).  Which means I have to figure out how to display that many deserts!  I saw this on etsy:

Fresh Pastry Stand has some amazing pieces – her stuff is just gorgeous!

And instantly wanted one but on our small budget just couldn’t afford the price tag on this beautiful piece so I started on my journey to making one of my own.  But if you don’t have the 30 minutes + thrifting time to do the project than by all means just buy one of the pre-made pieces from Fresh Pastry Stand on etsy.

Materials List:

  • 1 x cake stand handle fittings  ($2.99 on ebay)
  • 1 x ceramic drill bit for the size of your cake stand fittings ($10)
  • 3 x vintage plates in 3 sizes from your local thrift store (we got all of ours from the bins for a whooping $2.50)
  • Masking tape or painting tape
  • ruler

Instructions:

  • Make and X in the middle of the plates with your masking tape (to reinforce when you drill)

  • Measure your plate and mark a dot for the center on your blue tape
  • Drill a hole with your ceramic drill bit.  Using a teaspoon of water once the hole is started helps keep temp down and helps the drill bit grip.  I drilled on my lawn so the bit could go through and not ruin anything but it still allowed the plate to be supported.
  • Assemble the plates with the cake stand fittings; screw on underside of plate, metal washer, plastic washer, bottom plate, plastic washer, first tier level fitting, plastic washer, middle plate, plastic washer, second tier level fitting, plastic washer, top plate, plastic washer, top handle.

  • Tighten and enjoy.

See? Easy Peasy.  We didn’t bother with matching plates to carefully because we had collected a few florals plates for the desert table and I only belated decided to try this.  I’m so pleased with how it looks though! Especially my little 70s one.

FASHION FRIDAY: Returned from China, Meg & Dee

Meg & Dee are finally back from China!  And Jax & I are up visiting them!

Hopefully you’ll see much more of us after this week.  The transition for all of us (their return and our travel up north) has resulted in us being a little lax in our postings.

Here are some pics of Meg and Dee.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Monday Meals: Lime & Cilantro Quinoa Salad

Summer hasn’t really started here in Portland but that hasn’t stopped me from preparing summery dishes (even if it is a little cold for them – I can’t believe how long the cold has hung on here this year!).  This is one of my favorite recipes every summer because the flavors meld so well and it’s perfect served cold.  Quinoa is a superfood, full of 8 amino acids, gluten free and full of protein so it’s also perfect for the littles!

Lime, Cilantro & Black Bean Quinoa Salad

Ingredients: Yields 8 servings

  • 2 cups vegetable broth (chicken works great as well)
  • 1 cup quinoa, rinsed in cold water
  • 2T olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 2T freshly squeezed lime juice (I often do more because I like the zestyness but you can always add at the end to your own personal taste)
  • 1tsp lime zest
  • 1/2 cup of black beans(can is okay just rinse them)
  • 1/2 cup tomatoes, diced or halved
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • salt & pepper to taste

Directions: In a small bowl, mix together olive oil, garlic, lime juice, lime zest, stevia and salt & pepper. Put aside. In a large pot, add quinoa to boiling vegetable broth, stir, turn heat down to low, cover and let quinoa cook for about 20min. Once cooked, fluff quino with a fork and place in a medium size bowl.

Add lime dressing, black beans, cilantro and tomatoes. Mix. I like this cold, but you can also serve warm.

Also, pair it with plain yogurt – so yummy and the flavors really compliment each other!  I hope this recipe helps contribute to some fabulous summer Bar-b-ques!

Here’s to the Dads

Here’s to all the dad’s out there who have made us all the people we are today.  I know Ash and I are super lucky to have a fabulous dad in our lives and to have fabulous dads for our babies now that we’re grown.   It’s amazing how much a dad can build you into the person you are and what minute silly details make the most difference in your life.  So in honor of Father’s Day I thought I’d share my favorite memory of my dad (well among many but this one just showed he cared).

Remember in high school when it was someones birthday and they got called to the principals office for a special birthday delivery? Everyone would be so intrigued by what they’d walk back through the doors to the classroom holding and awed by how many people loved them!  Not everyone was lucky enough to have parents that would deliver something special on their birthdays but my dad would always make at least one delivery for us during the day.  When we returned from the office it was always with a bouquet of roses in our twin colors – purple for me and pink for Ashley.  I’m not sure why this sticks in my mind so clearly as a favorite memory of my dad but I think it’s because it really set the bar for the men I would date in the future.  We were taught from a young age that it was the thoughtful gifts that made a difference, not necessarily the expensive ones.  You know, that perfect gift that shows the person really knows you?  I think that’s what those flowers always symbolized, that Dad had known us from the very beginning when we dressed in all pink and purple and he still loved us regardless of our poor fashion sense.  It was an “inside” gift and it always meant the world to me.

We love you Dad!

Featured Etsy Shop: Scissor Mill

We were so in love with these customizable beer mugs for our Father’s Day giveaway that we had to write Sara from Scissor Mill and see if she’d donate one.  Lucky for our giveaway winner, Sara agreed and a custom mug is now going to one lucky dad ;)

If you missed out on the giveaway don’t worry you can still get your custom pieces from Scissor Mill for all sorts of other occasions!  For example, if you’re having a wedding this summer why don’t you get your groomsmen personalized beer mugs:

Customize beer mugs with the names of your groomsmen.

Or if you’re attending a baby shower and want to spoil the mom or dad instead of getting yetanother burp cloth that they may not even use why not go for these “mom & dad” glasses (or even celebrating a baby coming into the world):

So cute for parents-to-be!

This keep calm and mother on wine glass would also be perfect for your moms birthday or a mother-to-be:

We got so many comments on this for the Father’s Day giveaway as a favorite item from Scissor Mill, I just had to include it!

I kinda love these customized baking dishes (I will never lose another casserole dish at a potluck again and since my large casserole dish has gone MIA since the last potluck I attended I’m seriously considering this cute owl):

No one will be mistaking this casserole for their own!

Sara designs and applies the etching by hand so each piece is really unique!  We hope you go and support her shop for your next unique occasion too!
